Abstract
Objective: To analyze the management and prevention of opioid intoxication syndrome in the emergency room. Literature review: Opioids are essential drugs in the treatment of moderate to severe pain and have a potent analgesic effect. Despite this, these drugs can cause some serious side effects that compromise the patient's general well-being. In addition, inappropriate prescription can generate chemical dependence and withdrawal syndrome. Naloxone was the most widely used drug to reverse opioid intoxication, which was developed in the 1960s and was the first opioid receptor antagonist to reduce the clinical symptom of induced respiratory depression, without producing receptor agonist effects. Final considerations: Naloxone is an effective drug for the management of opioid intoxication in the current drug treatment. Furthermore, the preoperative preventive approach is an efficient approach to avoid possible opioid intoxication resulting from the incorrect use, dependence or abuse of opioids formally prescribed by doctors.
