Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the physiological effects of vitamin D use in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, with articles published between 2015 and 2024. The guiding question used was: “What is the relationship between the use of vitamin D and diabetes mellitus?”. The bibliographic research was carried out in the Web of Science (CLARIVATE), PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus (Elsevier) databases, using the Health Sciences Descriptors (DECS): “Vitamin D” and “Diabetes mellitus” and the Boolean operator “AND. Results: The relationship between vitamin D and diabetes mellitus through the analysis of blood glucose, bone density and beta cell function indicates that supplementation of this vitamin improves insulin sensitivity. Thus, vitamin D deficiency is related to the risk of developing Diabetes Mellitus. Final considerations: Vitamin D supplementation prevents the control of Diabetes Mellitus. Although more studies are still needed to define dosages and evaluate long-term effects, vitamin D is promising in the treatment of the disease.
