Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of bacteriophages against ultra-resistant bacteria. Methods: The Scopus, U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PubMed), and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) databases were searched. Descriptors “bacterial infections OR bacteria Infections” AND “phage therapy OR phage therapy” AND “antibacterials OR antibacterial agents” AND “treatment result OR treatment result” NOT “review OR review”. Original articles published in Portuguese or English in the last 3 years were selected. A total of 1,072 articles were found, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology. Results: Study of 17 articles on the effectiveness of bacteriophage therapy in antioxidant microorganisms. The following were highlighted: article code, author, year of publication, type of study, intervention, and main development. Categorization into groups: ineffectiveness of treatment, effectiveness with bacteriophages alone, and effectiveness with bacteriophages in synergy with antibiotics, indicating that the latter group is more effective than the other two. Final considerations: The use of phage therapy may be a promising alternative for bacterial infections, so there is a need for research to better understand the mechanisms of action of bacteriophages and improve their clinical use.
