Abstract

Objective: To determine the use of methylphenidate by children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, establishing its therapeutic effects and potential adverse effects, as well as the criteria used in the medical decision to prescribe the drug to young people. Methods: Integrative literature review in the Lilacs, Scielo and PubMed databases of studies published between 2013 and 2022. The descriptors “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”, “Methylphenidate” and “ADHD” were used. Results: The final sample consisted of 14 articles, which addressed the benefit of the drug mainly in cognitive functions and several adverse effects, such as insomnia, anxiety, headache, growth suppression, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular events and psychotic symptoms. There was no evidence of a guideline that would assist in the decision to prescribe the drug. Final considerations: The undesirable effects of methylphenidate were well established and studied in depth in the sample studies, while the benefits and repercussions on social interactions were not studied in such depth, which could be an obstacle to an ethical medical prescription.
