Abstract
Objective: To correlate prolonged bisphosphonate use, for more than 3 years, as a risk factor for atypical femur fractures. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted using the descriptors “atypical femur fracture” and “bisphosphonate,” employing the Boolean operator “AND.” The databases used were the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), the Virtual Health Library (BVS), and the Cochrane Library. Articles were included based on the following criteria: published between 2013 and 2023, available in full text in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and belonging to one of the following study types: clinical trials, controlled clinical trials, and observational studies. Results: The search and selection criteria yielded a total of 23 articles that associated bisphosphonate use with atypical femur fractures after a certain duration of treatment. Final Considerations: Bisphosphonate users should be evaluated after 3 years of use, considering the risk of atypical femur fractures and the need to individualize treatment continuation decisions to balance benefits and risks.
