Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationship between breastfeeding and the prevention of childhood obesity, assessing its protective role. Methods: This is an integrative review. The research was conducted in the PubMed and BVS databases using the descriptors “Breast Feeding,” “Disease Prevention,” and “Obesity.” The review included free-access studies in English, published between 2018 and 2023. A total of 21 articles were selected for analysis. Results: The evidence indicates that exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months is associated with a reduced risk of childhood obesity by age four. The composition of breast milk, particularly the presence of hormones that regulate appetite, plays a key role in this association. Additionally, prolonged breastfeeding and the appropriate introduction of complementary foods were critical factors in preventing excessive weight gain. Final considerations:  Breastfeeding serves as a protective factor against childhood obesity. However, promoting environments that support healthy eating habits and physical activity is essential to reinforce this protection.
