Abstract
Objective: To review the literature on the use of venous and central oxygen saturation in sepsis. Methods: This was an integrative literature review in the database: PubMed. The inclusion criteria consisted of articles published in the last five years, in English, Spanish and Portuguese, that addressed the proposed theme. Review studies, theses, dissertations, repeated articles and articles that did not correspond to the theme were excluded. Results: After surveying the articles through the databases and following the pre-established inclusion criteria, we obtained a total of 32 studies that were read in full. Only 15 were used and the results are shown in a table. Final considerations: It was observed that venous oxygen saturation in critically ill patients has diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic value. There is no physiological argument for targeting specific SvO2 values where optimizing one to three of the four SvO2 components can produce a clear dependence on the fourth. Several recent randomized trials have failed to show any improvement in the survival of these patients despite demonstrating their benefit in sepsis.
