Abstract
Objective: To carry out a survey of hospital infections, association with average length of stay of patients and the incidence of infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria in a hospital in southwest Bahia. Methods: A cross-sectional documentary study in which notification forms obtained from the Hospital Infection Control Service were analyzed. Service corresponding to the period from February 2018 to December 2018 were analyzed. The biological materials of patients affected by nosocomial infections were analyzed at the institution's Microbiology Laboratory, and the determination of bacterial resistance was based on the CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute). Results: 40 cases of nosocomial infection were identified, with a higher incidence in the months of February, December and April. There were 22 cases of skin and soft tissue infections, 6 in the urinary tract, 4 in the respiratory tract, 3 nonspecific, 2 in the surgical site, 1 in the gastrointestinal tract, 1 in the eye and 1 in the musculoskeletal system. Hospital infections increase the average length of hospital stay by up to three times Conclusion: There is a great impact of nosocomial infections, especially those caused by multidrug resistant bacteria. The decrease in nosocomial infections decreases the average length of stay and the decrease in the average length of stay decreases the incidence of nosocomial infection.
