Abstract
Objective: To analyze the benefits of prescribing sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors in patients with heart failure. Thus, evaluating the reduction of cardiovascular events in these patients. Methods: The methodological approach of this work advocates a compilation of bibliographic research with a qualitative approach and descriptive character through an extensive literature review. The databases used were PubMed and BVS. The search for articles was performed using the descriptors: “heart failure”, “sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitors”, “mortality” and “aged”. Inclusion criteria were randomized or non-randomize controlled clinical trial articles, incidence study, prevalence study, open access articles, articles published in English, Portuguese, Spanish, elderly people aged 65 years or older, in the range from 2020 to 2022. Results: The advantages of using SGLT2 inhibitors in the treatment of heart failure were evaluated, showing positive results in reducing mortality, hospitalizations and improving quality of life. Final Considerations: Thus, it was observed that, with the use of these drugs, the morbidity and mortality rates of patients with HF reduced considerably, leading to a decrease in the number of hospitalized patients.
