Abstract

Objective: To review the literature on treatments for glaucoma associated with ocular hypertension. Literature review: Standard treatment for glaucoma and ocular hypertension is mainly performed via topical monotherapy (use of eye drops), especially with prostaglandin analogues (such as latanoprost, latanoprosten and tafluprost). Within this context, such eye drops in their versions without preservatives have, in general, greater tolerability, safety, and the same desired effect as their versions with preservatives. In addition to prostaglandin analogues, the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension can also be performed with topical beta-adrenoblocker monotherapies (timolol and betaxolol), although their inferiority to prostaglandins has been demonstrated. Another important finding was that the long-term results of trabeculoplasty, if compared with the use of eye drops, would be better and more cost-effective than standard treatment. Final considerations: Based on the findings of this review, it is suggested that clinical trials be carried out involving the aforementioned treatments, seeking robust scientific evidence of their effectiveness in the treatment of ocular hypertension.
