Abstract

Objective: To outline the sociodemographic and clinical-epidemiological profile of patients surgically treated for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a general hospital in the interior of Minas Gerais. Methods: Descriptive, exploratory, retrospective, and documentary research was carried out with a quantitative approach, based on the evaluation of medical records. Participants were all patients who underwent carpal tunnel release surgery in a general hospital in the interior of Minas Gerais from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. The variables analyzed were sex, age, education, race, occupation, clinical status, current medications, associated comorbidities (Diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism), overweight/obesity, and body mass. Results: A total of 72 patients were evaluated, 57 women (79%) and 15 men (21%). Regarding the comorbidities presented, 82% were overweight/obese and 17% had hypothyroidism. The main symptoms found were hand and wrist pain (86%) and paresthesia (85%). Conclusion: The medical literature describes the relationship between CTS and work. Therefore, based on the found results, in addition to the current literature, it is possible to outline interventions regarding the human being (overweight/obesity) and ergonomic and organizational changes in the occupational environment, seeking to prevent CTS.
