Abstract

Objective: To analyze studies and evidence on Chagas cardiomyopathy and its consequences. Bibliographic review: The epidemiology of Chagas disease has changed, surpassing the limits of endemic territories, becoming a global health issue today. Chagas cardiomyopathy affects about one-third of individuals with Chagas disease, characterized by its inflammatory repercussions in the heart tissue, causing functional and anatomical changes in this organ. In the chronic phase of the disease, Chagas cardiomyopathy can have different clinical presentations, from asymptomatic patients to those with electrical conduction abnormalities, heart failure and thrombus formation. In addition, sudden cardiac death is the main cause of death in patients with Chagas disease, and may even be the first manifestation of the pathology. Final considerations: The existence of clinical and complementary findings must be in the line of reasoning of professionals for the suspicion of Chagas cardiomyopathy. Thus, it is evident that the early diagnosis favors the pathology not to culminate in terminal stages and consequences are reduced. Furthermore, there is a shortage in the current literature on the subject that needs to be revised and reversed.
