Abstract

Objective: Objective: To analyze the effect of regular physical activity on the reduction of postpartum depression (PPD). Methods: This is an integrative review conducted in the databases Virtual Health Library (VHL) and National Library of Medicine (PubMed). The descriptors "Depression, Postpartum" and "exercise" were used, using the Boolean operator "AND". Articles whose studies were of the type clinical trial, controlled clinical trial or observational study, in English, with full text and published in the last 5 years (2018-2023) were included. Results: Of the 19 articles selected, 12 found an inverse relationship between regular practice of physical activity and PPD. It has been shown that the practice of regular exercises throughout pregnancy and after delivery by pregnant and postpartum women decreased the incidence of PPD and reduced its symptomatology. 7 selected studies did not observe this relationship, however there were limitations such as decreased adherence to the proposed interventions and the possibility that pregnant women considered active were not sufficiently active in observational studies. Final considerations: It is considered that the practice of regular physical activity has an effective preventive and therapeutic effect in reducing PPD, constituting an effective and safe intervention in its management.
