Abstract
Objective: To elucidate the most effective alternative treatments available for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), as well as their complementary therapies. Methods: This study is an integrative literature review, which conducted a comprehensive search of articles in electronic databases, including PubMed, Medline and Science Direct. The search was carried out using combinations of keywords in English, such as "irritable bowl syndrome", "alternative treatments for bowl", "abdominal pain" and "Monosaccharides and Polyols (FODMAP)". A selection of articles published in the last five years (2019-2023) was then made, covering a total of 13 articles listed. Results: Among the thirteen articles selected, two involved alternative treatment with acupuncture (10.52%), three with probiotics (15.78%), six on an elaborate diet low in FODMAPs (36.84%) and seven with herbal medicines (36.84%). However, the research was carried out in developed countries (China, Italy, Poland) where approximately 10-15% of the population has IBS. However, Brazil, which has a similar situation, has not presented any research on the subject. Final considerations: The alternative herbal medicine treatments in this review proved to be viable strategies to be employed by gastroenterologists, mainly due to their complementary beneficial effects.
