Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze temporal trends, regional distribution, and structural limitations of computed tomography in the Brazilian Unified Health System between 2016 and 2026. Methods: This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, combined with a literature review. Secondary data were obtained from the Outpatient Information System of SUS (SIA/SUS) and the SUS Procedures Table Management System (SIGTAP). Tomography production records by region were analyzed from 2016 to 2026, including partial data from 2026. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in tables and figures. Results: A progressive increase in tomography production was observed from 2016 to 2025, rising from 4,329,295 to 13,404,559 exams, with predominance in the Southeast region. Regional inequalities in access were identified, as well as limitations related to SIGTAP coding, underfunding, and unequal technological distribution. Partial 2026 data indicate sustained demand. Conclusion: Tomography production in the Brazilian public health system has significantly increased, although marked by regional inequalities and structural limitations. Improvements in funding, service organization, and health information systems are essential to enhance access and equity.
