Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Bibliographic Review: MS is a potentially progressive autoimmune neurological disorder of the central nervous system resulting from an autoimmune attack on the white matter. It is one of the main causes of neurological symptoms in young adults, with no known cure, predominantly affecting patients aged between 20 and 40 years. The most common manifestations are optic neuritis and brainstem and spinal cord syndrome. Final considerations: Multiple Sclerosis is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that typically affects young people and has a long-term chronic course. Although there is no cure for MS, early symptom control and disease progression are associated with delayed disability and better long-term outcomes. Disease-modifying therapies are the pharmacological basis of MS therapy. In addition, a multidisciplinary treatment that includes a physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist and psychologist should be carried out in order to improve the patient's quality of life and autonomy, in addition to minimizing the psychological effects of the disease.
