Abstract

Objective: To verify the association of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among patients with chronic diseases (CD). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which CD patients were evaluated in the outpatient clinics of the college. The assessment was performed using the MINI clinical instrument (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). The existence of association between the study variables was measured by chi-square or student's t tests, as appropriate. The significance level was 5%. Results: The sample consisted of 345 interviewees, with a mean age of 59.9± 13.2 years, the majority being female (55.9%), Catholic (82.5%), married (51.6 %) and leucoderms (51.9%). In isolation, arterial hypertension was the most identified chronic disease. The presence of depression and suicidal ideation was verified in one third of the interviewees. There was a positive association of depression in women, diabetics and patients with more than 10 years of disease. On the other hand, the variables married marital status and having only one CD were identified as a protective factor against depression and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: The results indicated that the association between depression and suicidal ideation in chronically ill patients was higher than that observed in the general population.
