Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Osteoarthritis (OA). Bibliographic review: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent arthritis worldwide, affecting 240 million people worldwide, being a chronic and disabling joint disease. In Brazil, OA is the fourth most common cause that affects individuals on leave from work, affecting approximately 27% of the population. Factors such as overweight, obesity and muscle weakness and advanced age have a great influence on the joint involvement of patients. OA is a low-grade inflammatory disease that affects all tissues of the joint, involving cartilage degradation, bone remodeling, osteophytes and synovitis. Final considerations: Osteoarthritis can be defined as a complex heterogeneous syndrome with involvement of multiple joint tissues of varying severity, which usually affects more the knee and hip joints. Its first-line treatment involves changing your lifestyle, increasing physical activity and reducing weight. In addition, oral and topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen, and Duloxetine can be used as an adjunct for chronic pain. Surgical therapy is reserved for end-stage OA.
