Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of acromegaly. Bibliographic Review: Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disease associated with high levels of growth hormone and insulin-like factor I. Acromegaly is a rare disease with an annual incidence of four per million. The average age at diagnosis ranges from 40 to 50 years and the disease is typically diagnosed with a delay of 5 to 10 years and, if left untreated, is associated with significant morbidity and increased mortality. Final considerations: Acromegaly is an endocrine disease whose main symptoms are enlarged hands and feet, changes in facial appearance and headaches, in addition to being accompanied by comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders and increased incidence of neoplasms. Its treatment aims at controlling the biochemical markers of disease activity, GH and IGF-I, in addition to reducing symptoms and comorbidities and is mainly done through surgery in addition to the administration of somatostatin receptor ligands, dopamine agonists and GH receptors.
