Abstract

Objective: To assess the consequences of congenital hypothyroidism on child development. Bibliographic review: Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH) can be classified as primary, secondary or tertiary and is due to the inability of the thyroid to produce T3 and T4, which are hormones responsible for various functions. When these hormones are below ideal levels, they can cause damage, since they are essential for the development of the central nervous system. One of the main risk factors is family history, followed by male gender. Early diagnosis is essential and occurs through the heel prick test in neonatal screening. As soon as the dysfunction is detected, treatment should be carried out with daily oral tablets of the T4 hormone. Final considerations: It is clear that CH has serious consequences for the newborn as it affects cognitive and physical development. Thus, it is essential to carry out an early diagnosis and timely treatment to avoid irreversible mental retardation.
