Abstract

Objective: To analyze studies and evidence on the impact that mastectomy causes on body image and its particularities. Bibliographic review: Breast cancer is a complex disease, with high incidence, due to its causality being multifactorial and its treatment being diverse. Mastectomy, the main line of treatment for the pathology, causes damage to the woman's body image, as it modifies the appearance and body function, affecting the identity of individuals. The removal of the breast causes unwanted psychological effects, raising awareness of questions of self-esteem, femininity, the very feeling of mourning, favoring the appearance of diseases such as depression and anxiety. However, approaches such as breast reconstruction have positive effects on the self-esteem and well-being of these women. Final considerations: The modification of body image damages health and worsens quality of life. Thus, the alignment in the therapeutic approach for post-mastectomized women is fundamental for the suffering and disturbance of the body image to decrease. Furthermore, there is a shortage in the literature on the subject that needs to be reversed.
