Abstract

Objective: To analyze the indications and benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) during the climacteric period. Literature Review: Menopause marks the decline in female reproductive function, defined by the absence of menstruation for at least 12 months, retrospectively, which occurs due to primary ovarian insufficiency, generally between the ages of 45 and 55. In addition to increasing the risk of chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, a lack of estrogen during this period is also associated with osteoporosis. This review's main objective is to analyze the indications and benefits of hormone replacement therapy in menopause. In this scenario, HRT constitutes an efficient approach for the management of vasomotor and genitourinary symptoms that occur at this stage, in addition to presenting benefits on the cardiovascular and bone health of women who are in the window of opportunity. Despite this, hormonal therapy may have contraindications, such as use in patients with a family history of breast and endometrial cancer, for example. Final Considerations: This therapy must be individualized, considering personal preferences and appropriate clinical indications, in order to maximize its benefits.
