Abstract
Objective: To analyze the modulation of the intestinal microbiota and its impacts on the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Methods: This is an integrative review carried out in Portuguese in the Pubmed, Scopus and BVS databases. The following criteria were used for inclusion of articles: articles in English and Spanish published between 2020 and 2025, addressing the modulation of the microbiota in people with ASD. The exclusion criteria were systematic reviews, meta-analyses, opinion articles, doctoral theses and dissertations. Results: Of the selected studies, intervention with prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics and/or fecal microbiota transplantation in people with ASD resulted in changes in the intestinal microbiota, in the behavioral pattern and improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms. Final considerations: It can be considered that alterations in the intestinal microbiota are frequently observed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and are often related to gastrointestinal and behavioral symptoms. Interventions with probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation emerge as promising strategies.
