Abstract

Objective: To analyze palliative care for patients with advanced-stage Alzheimer's disease. Methods: A literature review was conducted in the PubMed database and the Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library of the Ministry of Health, using the descriptors "Alzheimer Disease", "Palliative Care", and "Patients". After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 articles were selected that offer insights into the importance of this care. Results: The results emphasize the need for a patient-centered approach and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care, promoting comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Health policies and clinical practices should include support measures for caregivers to mitigate their impact on mental health and well-being. Open communication from the onset of the disease is crucial to ensure patients receive care appropriate to their needs. Final considerations: Challenges such as limited access to palliative care services and the development of specific interventions for different stages of the disease persist, highlighting the need for ongoing commitment to research, education, and interprofessional collaboration. These conclusions provide crucial insights to enhance clinical practice, aiming to improve the quality of life for patients with advanced-stage Alzheimer's and their caregivers.
