Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of electronic cigarette (EC) use among medical students in Belo Horizonte and to analyze its association with risk behaviors such as alcohol consumption, conventional tobacco use, and anxiety levels. Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive study conducted with 156 medical students through the application of a structured questionnaire comprising 29 items. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the participating institution. Results: A higher prevalence of EC use was observed in the 18–24-year age group, as well as a worrisome disconnect between technical knowledge about the harms of these devices and their actual use. In addition, EC use was associated with other harmful health behaviors, underscoring the need for integrated prevention strategies in the academic setting. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need to strengthen medical education regarding public health policies and educational actions aimed at harm reduction, thereby contributing to the development of a more critical and ethical professional practice committed to the promotion of collective health.
