Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and skills of medical students in Anápolis, Brazil, regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A quantitative, observational study was conducted with clinical and internship students at the Evangelical University of Goiás. Questionnaires were used to measure the level of knowledge about therapeutic interventions and preventive strategies. Results: Of the 264 students evaluated, 51.14% demonstrated adequate knowledge. Internship students showed superior performance (25.22%) compared to clinical students (24.18%). Regarding complications, diabetic retinopathy had the highest accuracy rate (66%), while diabetic foot (44%) and nephropathy (48%) showed the lowest results. Conclusion: The findings identify significant gaps in academic training regarding the management of T2DM complications. The need to implement targeted educational interventions to strengthen the clinical skills of future doctors is highlighted, seeking to improve the quality of care and reduce the impact of this pathology on the health system.
