Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of dentistry students in the public hospital context. Experience Report: This report covers the experiences of sixth-semester students from a Higher Education Institution's Dentistry program, conducted at a public hospital in the municipality of Caxias, Maranhão, during the month of March 2024, in the morning and afternoon periods. All activities were supervised by a faculty member of the hospital team, with training in Hospital Dentistry. The Problematization Methodology through the Maguerez Arch was adopted for the analysis. The experience provided an insight into the limitations faced in the public health context. The scarcity of resources, the lack of adequate surgical instruments, and the poor quality of personal protective equipment (PPE) demonstrated the need for adaptation to ensure the provision of healthcare to patients. During the visit to the ICU, the precarious infrastructure conditions and lack of biosafety highlighted failures in infection control. Furthermore, the use of materials provided by the students themselves underscored the lack of resources to perform simple procedures, such as patients' oral hygiene. Final Considerations: The experience in hospital dentistry allowed for reflection on the challenges and opportunities in the field of public health.
