Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the hygiene habits related to removable dental prostheses among patients treated at a university dental clinic in the city of Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted using a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions related to removable denture cleaning habits, combined with a clinical examination performed using a dental mirror and a wooden tongue depressor. Results: The sample consisted of 52 participants aged 18 years or older. A predominance of maxillary removable partial dentures (RPDs) was observed, being used by 61.5% of the participants. It was found that 61.5% had never received professional guidance on denture hygiene. Consequently, 59% reported using a toothbrush, toothpaste, and water to clean their dentures. Furthermore, 65.4% did not immerse their dentures in appropriate cleansing solutions, and 63.5% reported sleeping while wearing them, a practice associated with the development of oral diseases. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate a high prevalence of inadequate denture hygiene practices, highlighting the need for educational initiatives and the active involvement of dental professionals and students in promoting oral health through patient education and awareness.
