Abstract

Objective: To identify scientific evidence about care aimed at preventing primary bloodstream infections from central venous catheters in an Adult Intensive Care Unit. Methods: This is an integrative literature review carried out by searching the LILACS, BDENF, IBECS, Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE/Pubmed databases, built according to the PRISMA methodology (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Two independent researchers performed the combination of descriptors. Information regarding the database, author, year of publication, research design, and main results were examined. The included studies were organized using the Rayyan software, a free web application from the Qatar Foundation and after applying eligibility criteria. For the evaluation of the studies, the application of the model by pyramid of evidence was used. Results: 13 studies published until 2021 were included, as the main preventive measures are hand hygiene, dressing impregnated with chlorhexidine and training and qualification of the team. Final considerations: The association of correctly performed techniques, modernized solutions and products, use of bundles and effective hand hygiene, reduce the number of cases of infections and directly impact the length of hospitalization of patients.
