Abstract

Objective: To analyze sociodemographic indicators of a metropolitan area of Brazil, with municipalities included in the Central Urban Center (NUC), and possible correlations with the number of cases and deaths from COVID-19. Methods: An ecological, cross-sectional study that evaluates social inequality rates and distributions of families enrolled in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Brazilian Federal Government, and repercussions during the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, in the metropolitan region of Paraná. Results: There was a very strong correlation between the Gini index and accumulated deaths between region. The municipality of Piraquara had significantly lower rates of cases and deaths when compared to the municipalities of the NUC, while the sociodemographic indices had significantly higher values. Conclusion: The possibility of evaluating the evolution of preventive measures, due to differences between regions and vulnerable groups, allows the optimization of strategies to combat COVID-19, and results in a greater understanding of the disease.
