Abstract
Objective: To analyze the evidence available in the literature about the psychological aspects and therapeutic interventions associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in critical ICU patients. Methods: Integrative analysis of the scientific evidence available in the PubMed and Scielo databases. 11 studies were included for discussion in this integrative review, all published on the PubMed platform. Results: About 17 to 30% of patients develop PTSD after ICU discharge. Female patients with a previous history of PTSD, depression and anxiety are a risk factor. The incidence of PTSD may also vary according to the severity of the condition, cardiac pathologies have a prevalence of around 14% to 18% and 15% to 24% of polytraumatized patients have symptoms associated with PTSD. Final considerations: Symptoms of anxiety, depression, panic syndrome that can last for a period of 6 months or up to 1 year after hospital discharge are reported in the literature. Adult and female patients are the most affected. Strategies such as control of the underlying disease, control of inflammation, status epilepticus and delirium help to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce cognitive and motor decline.
