Abstract

Objective: Describe the factors contributing to the lack of adherence to photoprotection measures in patients diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer. Case details: Three male patients residing in the city of Manaus, self-declared as phototype II, diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer and undergoing treatment, report engaging in occupational activities that require significant sun exposure for over 20 years. During consultations, they stated that before the diagnosis, they were unaware of photoprotection barriers; however, even after receiving health education, they still do not regularly use sunscreen or other recommended physical barriers. Final considerations: Among the factors contributing to the lack of adherence to prophylactic measures suggested by the healthcare team, those related to low income stand out, as they either did not purchase sunscreen or did not reapply it frequently. Additionally, it was observed that the fear of diagnosis and treatment was not a determining factor for all patients in this study to reduce sun exposure time, as their respective jobs depend on this detrimental condition to their health. Finally, the importance of socio-economic evaluation of patients is emphasized to propose feasible measures and ongoing awareness of the relevance of self-care in the treatment.
