Abstract

Objective: To analyze the knowledge and practices of nurses from the Family Health Strategy regarding the Pap smear test in pregnant women. Methods: This is descriptive cross-sectional research, carried out in a city in the state of Maranhão. Data collection was carried out from June 1st to August 31st, 2023. The collected questionnaires were implemented in the REDCap software to produce a database. When defining statistical methods, REDCap produced spreadsheets that were exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software version 25.0 (SPSS), using descriptive statistics. Results: Of the nurses, 20% did not perform the Pap smear. 21.4% reported having difficulties in taking the exam. 60% stated that they had not participated in training in a syndromic approach and 98% stated that they had difficulties in treating vaginal discharge. Conclusion: Weaknesses were identified in nurses' knowledge regarding the Pap smear test, as well as in the execution of the test. A special frequency of nurses did not perform the Pap smear on pregnant women for various reasons that were not echoed in scientific evidence. Difficulties were observed regarding carrying out the exam and reading the exam and a lack of training in syndromic approaches to vaginal corrections in pregnant women.
