Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the motivation and empathy manifested by medical studentsduring in person consultations and teleconsultations. Methods: 8th period medical students (n=63), from UNI-BH School, allocated to teleconsultations (n=28) and to in person consultations (n=35), were selected by convenience to participate in the study. Motivation was evaluated by conducting the Brazilian version of the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS-BRV), in the thirteenth week of care. To assess the empathic behavior throughout the semester, the Jefferson scale (JSPE-vs) was used, applied in the third week and then in the thirteenth week of care. Results: Motivation was high in all dimentions of both groups. The results from empathy global score showed that, before prolongued exposure to IPC and TC, both groups were equal. After this exposure, the IPC group had superior outcomes. Conclusion: The IPC group showed greater empathy development. Both groups had high motivation scores, related to the greater empathy, during medical consultations.
