Abstract

Objective: To review the literature on the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients through laser therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Methods: This is an integrative review, carried out by searching the PubMed and Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO) databases, selecting articles published in Portuguese and English between 2014 and 2023. Laboratory studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses were included, and abstracts of conferences, monographs, dissertations and theses were excluded. Results: Low-level laser therapy accelerates the healing of oral mucositis, relieves pain and reduces inflammation, promoting faster recovery. Photodynamic therapy, in turn, is used in the management of mucositis from the perspective of microbial control of infected lesions, since the light interaction with a previously applied photosensitizing agent produces reactive oxygen species that eliminate microorganisms, accelerating the recovery process. Final considerations: Laser therapy and PDT are effective approaches in the treatment and prevention of oral mucositis, promoting comfort and quality of life for patients. However, the variability in laser protocols and the lack of standardization in studies make it difficult to compare results. These limitations must be overcome for their widespread implementation in clinical practice.
