Abstract
Objective: To assess the basic knowledge of orthopedics and the self-perception of this knowledge among pediatric medical residents in Minas Gerais. Methods: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study conducted with 30 pediatric residents. A structured online questionnaire with multiple-choice questions was used, based on common orthopedic conditions in childhood. Results: No statistically significant difference was found in self-perceived safety or performance on objective tests between first-, second-, and third-year residents. Most participants (96.7%) recognized the importance of including orthopedic training in pediatric residency, but only 43.3% reported receiving such training, mainly through pediatric orthopedic outpatient clinics. The average self-perception score regarding safety in managing orthopedic conditions was 2.4 (on a scale from 1 to 5), and the average score on the theoretical test was 12.1 out of 20 questions. The highest success rate (96.7%) was observed on a question about lower limb pain, while the lowest (16.7%) concerned bone metabolism diseases. Conclusion: The results reveal unsatisfactory performance and indicate the need to improve orthopedic education in pediatric training. It is concluded that expanding orthopedic content in both undergraduate and residency programs is essential, with institutional support from the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics.
