Abstract

Objective: To identify the diagnostic and therapeutic management of hyperglycemia in non-critical patients hospitalized in the internal medicine ward. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative, and retrospective study was conducted using data obtained from medical records. Hospital hyperglycemia was defined as capillary blood glucose levels >180 mg/dL. Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square goodness-of-fit test and the G goodness-of-fit test, with a significance level of 5% and a 95% confidence interval. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample included 165 patients, predominantly male, aged between 60 and 79 years. Capillary blood glucose was measured in most cases, with a prevalence of hyperglycemia of 21.2%. There was no statistically significant difference between patients with a previous diagnosis of diabetes and those without. Among patients with diabetes, 57.1% had glycated hemoglobin testing requested. The most frequently used therapeutic regimen was sliding-scale insulin(58.2%). Conclusion: The diagnosis and management of hospital hyperglycemia in non-critical patients remain inadequate and are not in accordance with the recommendations of the Brazilian Diabetes Society, which may contribute to an increased risk of complications.
