Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of Punica granatum L. supplementation on body weight and obesity-related metabolic parameters based on randomized clinical trials and preclinical studies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO. PubMed, ScienceDirect, CAPES Journals, and the Cochrane Library were searched. Randomized clinical trials in humans and experimental animal studies were included. Methodological quality was assessed using RoB 2 and SYRCLE, and analyses were performed in RevMan 5.4. Results: Of 12,668 identified studies, 10 met the eligibility criteria. In humans, supplementation did not significantly reduce body weight, body mass index, or inflammatory markers, although trends toward improvement in lipid and antioxidant profiles were observed. In animal models, reductions in triglycerides and oxidative stress markers were reported. Final considerations: Punica granatum L. did not show a significant effect on body weight in humans, although favorable metabolic effects were observed in animal models. Heterogeneity and risk of bias limit the conclusions, and more robust, standardized clinical trials are needed.
