Abstract
Objective: To report a clinical case of recurrent pyogenic granuloma treated using a combination of basic periodontal therapy and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Case details: A 47-year-old female patient with melanoderma and no systemic conditions presented at the clinic of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University of Alagoas (FOUFAL) complaining of gingival overgrowth in the region of teeth 14 and 24. A medical history was taken, and a clinical examination was performed, along with supplementary radiographic and photographic evaluations. The patient reported a previous bilateral excision of the lesion, combined with scaling and root planing (SRP). Four months later, a recurrence occurred, confirmed by histopathological examination. Consequently, a new total excision was performed, combined with periodontal therapy and aPDT, aiming to eliminate the lesion and prevent recurrences. Conclusions: The combined approach resulted in a favorable clinical course, leading to clinical improvement and tissue repair, with no signs of recurrence during the six-month follow-up period. The findings suggest a promising clinical outcome, but further studies are needed to evaluate the role of aPDT as an adjuvant therapy.
