Abstract
Objective: To select and evaluate recent findings in the literature on tooth whitening. Methods: Search strategies were built for the PubMed electronic database. The descriptors were used: Tooth Bleaching OR Dental Aesthetics AND Dentistry. Articles published in the last six years were selected with the aim of grouping research with the most current information. Results: After reading the title, abstract and/or full text when necessary, 10 articles were selected. In order to determine the bleaching efficacy between different agents, 40% of the studies addressed this issue, 40% of the studies addressed the evaluation of the effect of bleaching agents on the erosion of the dental enamel surface as the main outcome, one study (10%) evaluated the impact of tooth whitening on the quality of life of individuals and another study (10%) evaluated the effect of dark drinks on the outcome of tooth whitening. Final considerations: Tooth whitening is a safe technique that increases quality of life, but more studies addressing current gaps in the literature are needed.
