Abstract
Objective: To expose the general panorama and epidemiological profile of leprosy in Brazil. Methods: This is a study through survey of epidemiological data. Information was obtained from Informatics Department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), in the subsections of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) and Mortality Information System (SIM). Results: Between 2011 and 2021, 375,942 cases of leprosy were found in Brazil. The Northeast region stands out for the largest number (42%). There was a preponderance of 15 years or older. There was prevalence in male, constituting 56.91%. Between 2011 and 2019, 1490 deaths were recorded. The country remains the second leader in new cases. This is mainly due to the patient's delay, mostly men, to start treatment. In the Northeast region, populations find it difficult to access health services. The Ministry of Health recommends increasing awareness of the disease in its early stage with campaigns and educational activities. Conclusion: There was a considerable reduction in cases in Brazil. However, it remains one of the leaders in the incidence of this disease. It is essential to maintain public policies in order to effect the eradication of leprosy.
