Abstract

Objective: To perform analysis and review of the main articles available on Gestational Intrahepatic Cholestasis (GIC), discussing the genetic influence, associated risk factors, diagnosis and treatment. Bibliographic review: GIC is a disorder that leads to an increase in serum bile acid, usually affecting pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy. It has variable clinical manifestations, with itching on the palmar and plantar surfaces being the most commonly found association. To make the diagnosis, it is necessary to take into account the clinical and laboratory findings, besides rule ing other causes such as gallstones and cholelithiasis. The treatment depends on the gestational period in which the woman is, and the interruption of pregnancy through childbirth is the definitive treatment. However, if this is not possible, clinical treatment for symptom control its done with ursodeoxycholic acid, in a standard dose of 300mg three times a day.  Final considerations: Despite being a rare complication, IGC can lead to unfavorable maternal and fetal outcomes, requiring medical follow-up during pregnancy for diagnosis and treatment.
