Abstract

Objective: To conduct a literature review on the benefits of botulinum toxin application in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. Methods: A literature review was carried out through the Pubmed database, using the time frame from 2017 to 2022, including articles in English and Portuguese, with the search strategy: botulinum toxin OR botox AND temporomandibular disorder OR TMD. Results: After analyzing the titles, abstracts and keywords, 24 articles were selected, 12 of which were bibliographic, 9 experimental, 1 clinical case and 2 retrospective studies. An effective study was visualized on botulinum toxin as an alternative treatment for temporomandibular disorders, in addition to showing the effectiveness of BTX-A not only in aesthetic treatments, but in a therapeutic way. Final considerations: It as seen that botulinum toxin can be a good treatment option for temporomandibular muscle dysfunction, proving to be effective in the treatment of TMD.
