Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate elementary skin lesions in fishing professionals and identify the main skin protection measures used by these professionals. Methods: Descriptive study with a quantitative approach to the data, sample composed of 43 fishermen. An instrument was used for data collection, in the form of a questionnaire containing 16 objective questions. Results: The data showed that 74.4% (32) of the fishermen had elementary skin lesions, with xerosis (dryness) 67.4% (29) being the most frequent dermatological complaint. Regarding the protection measures, 44.1% (19) of the fishermen used the combination: shirt, long pants and hat. Conclusion: Fishermen showed a high prevalence of elementary skin lesions, exposing themselves to ultraviolet radiation mainly at non-indicated times. Since the use of sunscreen is not common, it constitutes a population at high risk for skin cancer. The scarcity of studies focused on the subject highlights the importance of encouraging work with this public and of new research in the area.
