Abstract

Objective: It aims to analyze the current context regarding the bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus. Methods: Bibliographic survey of articles published between the years of 2018 to 2022, in portuguese and english languages, available for reading, found on the platforms LILACS, MEDLINE and BBO, having as inclusion criterion: systematic review studies; randomized clinical trial; cohort studies; case-control series; cross-sectional studies. Results: Approximately 137 articles were found, and, by the inclusion criteria used, 8 articles remained. Among these articles, most were of the systematic review type, where it was possible to analyze the bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus, and to note the importance of multidisciplinary follow-up for the non-progression of both diseases. Final considerations Diabetic patient is predisposed to develop periodontal disease as well as periodontal disease influences on diabetic patient’s glycemic level, showing bidirectional relationship between them.
