Abstract

Objective: To evaluate alcoholic consumption by medical students, before and during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional research will be carried out through questionnaire application through online platform Googleforms. We used variables with parameters from Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), used exclusively in patients previously diagnosed with depressive-type affective disorder. Results: 147 responses were received, 28% didn’t consume alcohol beverages and during pandemic was 29.3%. There was 4% increase in alcohol consumption between three/four times a week, and 11% increase in those who reported that they consumed alcohol up to twice a week, in the periods before and during the pandemic. Only 6% of participants reported that they stopped performing activities because they had consumed alcohol, and before a pandemic, it represented 10%. Conclusion: This study found that medical students had a minimal increase in alcohol consumption during the period of the pandemic and the academic performance of the participants was not affected. The results found differ from the literature, which could possibly be due to cultural and geographic differences, which influenced these results.
