Abstract

Objective: To review the main scientific publications in the last 10 years (2012-2022) on the therapeutic indications of testosterone and its chemical derivatives. Bibliographic review: It is not new that Testosterone and its chemical derivatives, Anabolic Androgenic Steroids, are part of the therapeutic arsenal of modern medicine. However, its indiscriminate, abusive use and without proper medical monitoring, causes several unwanted side effects and complications, generating a great controversy around its applicability. However, there are data in the literature that support its beneficial results in the treatment of several pathological entities that course with hypogonadism, sarcopenia, and functional loss, for example. In this sense, knowledge of the correct clinical indications and adequate dosages of these androgenic hormones guarantees more therapeutic opportunities for certain deleterious conditions for the individual. Final considerations: Despite the positive evidence shown in this review, this is an area of medicine that still needs more attention and research, especially in terms of controlling unwanted side effects, the consequences of the recreational and indiscriminate use of these hormones, and also demystifying them. of its therapeutic prescription by contemporary medical professionals.
