Abstract

Objective: To investigate the role of physiotherapy in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of chagasic patients with chronic constipation. Methods: This is a systematic review study that followed the PRISMA Statement (2020). With this, a high sensitivity search was performed in the Medline (PubMed), Web Of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase (Elsevier), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Google Scholar search mechanism, and PEDro databases. In addition, it relied on grey literature searches in the CAPES and Open Grey databases, and in the theoretical reference lists of primary studies. Results: The high-sensitivity systematic search resulted in 479 studies. After applying the eligibility criteria, four primary studies were included. This review encompassed a total of 112 chagasic patients with chronic IC, submitted to physiotherapeutic interventions, both diagnostic, with the performance of longitudinal physical examination and use of anorectal manometry, and therapeutic, with the use of abdominal massage therapy and practice of supervised physical exercises. Final considerations: The physical therapy protocols and modalities evaluated bring substantial benefits to the constipated chagasic patient, providing him with a better quality of life.
