Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Bibliographic review: Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) have impaired quality of daily life, as both diseases have a higher incidence in young patients, who have frequent symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloody stools, in addition to weight loss and chronic progression with repeated cycles of relapse and remission. It is believed that they arise from the interaction of four factors: environmental, genetic, microbiota and immunological. IBDs are chronic, autoimmune diseases that may present long periods of remission or frequent relapses, of which the etiology is not known. Final considerations: UC affects the colonic and rectal mucosa continuously, forming erosions and/or ulcers. While CD is characterized by discontinuous involvement with transmural and/or fistula involvement, which can affect any region of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, but mainly the ileocecal and perianal regions. Thus, it is essential to know and differentiate between these diseases in order to provide adequate diagnosis and treatment, improving quality of life.
