Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of the uterine arteries in pregnant women with a risk factor for preeclampsia (PE) and association with omega 3 supplementation. Methods: This was a trial clinical, randomized, 4 arms, with 169 pregnant women. They underwent anamnesis, physical examination, and obstetric examination with uterine artery Doppler. Omega was used at a dose of 500 mg, associated with the previously proposed treatment, either acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) or Heparin + ASA when patients were thrombophilic. Results: The mean age was 33.2 + 5.53 years, with a mean of 2.36 + 1.42 pregnancies, 0.74 + 0.93 deliveries, and 0.65 + 1.13 abortions. The mean uterine resistance index (MIR) was 0.60 + 0.16 and the mean pulsatility index (MIP) was 1.03 + 0.43. The association of these indices with the type of treatment (AAS; AAS + omega; Heparin + AAS and Heparin + AAS + omega was not different (p>0.05). Conclusion: Omega supplementation in patients with a risk factor for PE did not reduce uterine PI and RI. The use of omega 3 as PE prophylaxis should be questioned, as it does not reduce these rates.
